Concrete Textures – the Options are Endless!

Here’s just some of the textures that can be created with concrete. From stamped to carved, exposed aggregate or sand broadcast- applications and options are totally endless…..

Microcement hearth: beautiful mottling

This micro cement concrete hearth is less than 1/4” thick and is built over a wood sub frame clad in cement board.

Improper grading on this rooftop patio lead to water ponding and subsequent damage to the front facade on this multi family property.

First step was to remove existing membrane 40” from the front parapet wall across the entire width of the building- so the concrete could be re graded

Once removed we used Sika Quick 1000 to re slope the concrete to drain to the scuppers. This product allowed membrane to be re installed within 24 hours for fast turn around.

This process was completed in 5 days from start to finish.

Venetian plaster waterfall design/install

The existing waterfall had not been used in over a year, and leaked pretty bad. We first created a new smooth layer over the existing slate tiles, then waterproofed the entire wall and side returns. Once watertight, we added layer upon layer of Tadelakt lime plaster- the very plaster used in Moroccan architecture for their elaborate spas. We used our own style by using multiple colours in a vertical application adding to the look of the falling water. Very pleased with the end result!

Bobcat’s MT85 was the perfect machine for this interior excavation job! We removed over 10,000 square feet of concrete and 600 yards of soil to allow for suspended wood floors to be installed. All this work was done with this 36” wide walk behind track machine.

ICF outdoor living space: stamped concrete, carved concrete, acid stain, outdoor kitchen

The summer of 2018 I spent working with Solomon Colors designing and building this beautiful addition to Solomon’s training facility in Springfield Illinois

The idea was to create a multifunctional area that could be used as a gathering place after training sessions were done for the day. This is the result:

Fox Blocks ICF’s were used to allow for speed, ability to easily create elevation changes within the project

Panoramic view of the entire space- over 1600 square feet over 2 levels including: farm fire table, seated bar and grilling area, lower fire table with waterfall/custom rock work. This space easily entertained 50-80 people without crowding

Foam core concrete closed system waterfall

ICF retaining wall with 5″ stamped monolithic cap and vertical stone veneer

Custom landscaping complete with low and mid level shrubs and shade trees

Incredible shade sail to provide relief for those hot muggy days in Illinois

Decorative Concrete Live! 2018 World of Concrete

This was my second year helping Concrete Decor Magazine with the Decorative Concrete Live! exhibit. Its a very cool exhibit because it’s interactive and constantly evolving through the course of the show. The concept is a simple one: create a theme, pour concrete floors, install ICF block (supplied by Fox Blocks ) on the floors and- WA-LAH- you now have vertical and horizontal spaces for artists to come and display/teach their craft. There are literally months of planning and scheduling that need to go into this event.

Last year the theme was a 1600 square foot house plan. Each room had different artists working on walls, floors and teaching as they go. Outside display, there were manufacturers providing classes and information to any attendee at the World of Concrete. That was last year. This year the theme was the Mall of Concrete- a ginormous 5000 square foot multi building with plaza, sidewalks and drive thru isle. The entire display shell was built by 5 men in 4 days prior to the shows opening, allowing select artists to start their projects in anticipation of the start of the exhibits.

All in all, the display was a huge success. Any time an artist picked up a pail of product- or started working on a space, there was a throng of people drinking up any bits of knowledge they could take away and apply to their own work. It’s nice to see the interest is still there- I’m not sure it has ever died or gone away. I love being part of this industry and I can’t wait for what this year has in store!

Winnipeg, Norwood- Outdoor Patio Renovation: waterproofing, glass railing, shiplap, timber post

Here’s a simple second floor patio that was waterproofed with Sika 390 and top coated with Sika 510. Combined with the wood siding and frameless glass railing, it really does create a natural retreat. Perfect for a good book and glass of wine!
